Moved into a new apartment only to discover that the previous tenants smoked all the the closets stink of cigarette smell? Well, that's just bad luck. But bad luck or not, you still need to get rid of that smell and you need to do it fast!

For a start you should wash down your closet walls and ceiling with a solution of bleach and water. Then sprinkle carpet fresh on the rug and then put a box of baking soda in the closet - it will absorb the smell and should get rid of the smoke odor. You can also use vinegar mixed with water to wash closet walls, ceiling and floor.

Once all the surfaces are clean the baking soda should help absorb what odor is left. Although if the closet is open you might run into a bit of a problem as baking soda works better in a closed environment such as refrigerator, cabinets or car. You can also try to use vinegar instead of baking soda - soak a piece of white bread in vinegar and put it on a plate - much like baking soda it will soak smoke smell.

Some people also recommend using an orange peel or even sliced apples (in the same manner as you'd use a vinegar described above) to help get rid of smoke smell. If those methods don't seem to help as much as you'd like you could try using a commercial product. There are closet deordorizes such as Smells B Gone sold in hardware stores and as well as in some grocery stores in the cleaning supplies area.
