Academics at Sheffield University have expressed concern that they may be forced to carry out their own cleaning.
The Yorkshire Post reports that the University and Colleges Union (UCU) claims that as part of a new cost-cutting plan there will be a substantial reduction in office cleaning across the university.
Sally Hunt, UCU general secretary, explained many staff members are concerned about the health and safety implications of cutting back on cleaning, especially during the current swine flu alert.
She added: "Clearly profit and image matter more than people's safety. Staff have the right to be able to work in clean offices and shouldn't have to wait for weeks for floors to be vacuumed and fixtures to be wiped."
A university spokesman confirmed that further discussions would be taking place with the UCU on the issue.
Craig Grella, writing for Examiner.com, recently claimed that efficient office cleaning could help to increase the focus of employees in the workplace.
